The Venice Carnival is one of Italy’s oldest and most fascinating traditions, capable of transporting adults and children alike into a fairytale world of elegant masks, sumptuous costumes, and vibrant colors. In 2026, the celebration will begin on January 31 and end on February 11, offering more than ten days of shows, events, and magic for the whole family.
What is the Venice Carnival?
Dating back to the 12th century, the Venetian Carnival is world-famous for its characteristic masks: from the “bauta” to the “moretta,” from the “volto” to the “plague doctor,” each costume tells a story and reflects a piece of Venetian culture. During Carnival, the city’s narrow streets and squares become a grand stage for parades, masked balls, concerts, and theatrical performances.
The Carnival for children: a magical experience
For children, Carnival is a unique chance to live out a real-life fairytale. They can join creative workshops to make their own masks, enjoy puppet shows, jugglers, magicians, and have fun with many games organized in Venice’s most famous squares. Many activities are designed to let little ones discover the history and traditions of Venice in an engaging and playful way.
A particularly spectacular moment is the “Flight of the Angel”, which officially opens the Carnival with an event that leaves both kids and adults speechless.
